On Sunday, I attended a fascinating and in-depth discussion with Indigenous artists Michelle Sound and Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun with Indigenous engagement coordinator bailey macabre at the Nanaimo Art Gallery.
They spoke at length about their new exhibition shnu’a’th, ᐊᑳᒥᕽ akâmihk, the other side and how they use art to connect with the land and their family’s history with it. I was able to chat briefly with the two artists to learn even more afterwards.
I hope that their stories resonate with you and encourage you to see the exhibition, which runs until January 12, 2025.
Later that day, I swung by the Downtown Nanaimo Business Association’s Fall Fest in Diana Krall Plaza and took in some country-pop music while sipping some suds from local brewers. It was a fun family-friendly event with lots of parents and kids having a blast.
I finished the night watching a sold-out screening of Rice Boy at the inaugural event by the Nanaimo International Film Screening Society at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.
While construction on Commercial Street has blocked part of it to traffic, Nanaimo’s downtown has plenty of life in it and I would encourage everyone to take advantage of all the events and support local businesses.
We live in a great, if imperfect, city where flowers are growing through the cracks if you stop and look for them.
