Hi readers,
While I’m working on a larger story for you for next week, I thought I’d share a little more about the event we are hosting this weekend in Duncan for International Women's Day. We’ve brought together an incredible panel of experts and policymakers to discuss the question, "What supports are required to help women make empowered and informed decisions, whatever those decisions are?".
When deciding the topic for this year’s event, we talked a lot about how hard it can be to make choices regarding your health and personal life when it’s difficult to figure out what supports exist in your community and how to access those supports. So, we wanted to bring people together to discuss how we can strengthen resources for women locally and on the Island.
Part of our mission at The Discourse is to highlight solutions to issues our communities are facing. Given the current political climate around women’s rights, we thought it best to bring together a diverse panel of varying perspectives and experiences. We hope that lifting up voices of people working on real solutions in our community will help cut through the noise and create a positive space to talk about how we can provide the supports that women need to feel empowered in their health and personal care.
Keep your eyes open for another email from us tomorrow for a look at who will be joining us on Saturday, and a last chance to sign up for the event.
If you already know you’d like to attend, please pre-register on Eventbrite, as space is limited. Tickets are pay what you can afford, $20 to $30, and proceeds from the event will go towards the House of Honorable Mothers and The Discourse’s independent journalism.
Also, to celebrate International Women’s Day, check out a round-up of stories about inspiring women and gender-nonconforming folks making an impact in Nanaimo, put together by our reporter Mick Sweetman. Read more about that below!
