Hi readers,
This week, I got a chance to look at the recently released overdose response call numbers compiled by BC Emergency Health Services. While there are signs that overdose calls are going down in other regions like Nanaimo, calls in Duncan and North Cowichan held steady and even increased from 2023 to 2024.
Then, as I was writing, the province announced that it would end take-home safer supply effective immediately. So, the story's focus shifted slightly, but it was essential to include that context as the provincial government plays a significant role in responding to substance use-related harm. Read more about that below.
This week, I also wanted to share a story by our Nanaimo reporter, Mick Sweetman, about this year's Nanaimo march for MMIWG2S+, organized by the Vancouver Island University Student Union.
