Hello,

I’m writing to you today about something that is deeply personal to me and so many other people in our communities and beyond.

Saturday, Aug. 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a worldwide campaign to end overdose deaths and create space for people to grieve in community. It’s also a day to combat the intense stigma around illicit drug use — something that leads to so many people suffering in silence, rather than seeking out support and care.

The theme for this year’s International Overdose Awareness Day campaign is “Together We Can,” highlighting the power of community, especially when people come together.

I can’t begin to tell you how important community is when it comes to the toxic drug crisis. From supporting people struggling with addiction and the people who love and care for them, to supporting first responders and those working on the front lines of this crisis, community is crucial.

The Discourse has done a lot of reporting on this, and the common theme I’ve seen is that it takes a collective effort to find solutions that will save lives and support our friends, family and community members. It’s not easy work, and I’m constantly inspired by the individuals and organizations in our communities who are doing it.

In this newsletter, you’ll find information about International Overdose Awareness Day events in the Comox Valley, Nanaimo and Cowichan Valley. You’ll also find links to resources — both community-specific and general — and some of The Discourse’s past coverage related to the toxic drug crisis.

To those who have been touched by this, I’m sending you love and hope you can find the support you need, whatever that looks like for you. 💜
