Hey there,
This weekend I attended the Island edition of the Vancouver Reptile Expo at Beban Park, which featured a diverse mix of cold-blooded creatures on display and for sale, from ball pythons to tarantulas, geckos, scorpions and ants.
I chatted with a few of the vendors to find out how people get into breeding reptiles, what one might need to know before bringing an ant colony into their house (sorry mom), and whether it’s true that pythons can be cuddly (it’s not going to strangle me while I’m sleeping?) |

Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) and Vancouver Island University’s Department of Philosophy co-host a Philosophy Café on Thursday, March 28 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the library’s Harbourfront Branch on Commercial Street. Intended to be a space for the friendly discussion of ideas, this event’s theme looks at the origins of the biophilic city — which is defined as cities that contain abundant nature and strive to protect it. The discussion will look at examples of where the concept has been applied, how it relates to the Nanaimo Re-imagined City Plan, and will pose questions around whether Nanaimo already contains biophilic city elements, and what more can be done to enhance these.
