Last week, heat warnings were issued to much of Vancouver Island by Environment and Climate Change Canada as temperatures rose into the 30s during the day and hovered around the mid-teens overnight.
While temperatures have since dropped, with some rain in there to break the heat, we thought it was important to check in on our communities and see what the guidance is for residents during extreme heat events and what resources are available to them.
We spoke with representatives from the City of Nanaimo, Comox Valley Emergency Management and Emergency Management Cowichan Valley to learn more. You can read that story, along with our usual news roundup, below.

👉 Sixteen Regional District of Nanaimo properties along Plecas Road and Evans Road will move from Area C to Area A before the municipal elections in October to better align with how services are delivered, Nanaimo News Now reports. The province’s approval of this boundary change follows the adoption of a proposal between Nanaimo and Snuneymuxw First Nation that will allow around 800 residents of Snuneymuxw reserve lands to vote for Nanaimo’s mayor and council.
👉 The Millstone Trunk Sanitary Sewer Upgrades project is on hold for the summer after bids for the project came back as almost double the $3.3 million the city had budgeted for it, the Nanaimo News Bulletin reports.
👉 Nanaimo’s Ethan Katzberg is bringing back a gold medal from the Commonwealth Games in Scotland where he set a record in the men’s hammer throw on his very first attempt, CHEK News reports.
👉 A rezoning application to create a light industrial area between East Wellington Road and Northfield Road has been advanced to public hearing by Nanaimo City Council, Nanaimo News Now reports. The property surrounds the proposed data centre on East Wellington Road on three sides.
👉 Nanaimo RCMP is seeking witnesses to a suspicious fire in Bowen Park on the morning of Sunday, July 26. Fire crews responded to a report that two large trees near the pedestrian walking path in the park had been set on fire, the Nanaimo News Bulletin reports.
