Hi there,

Every year, our tiny team gathers around our laptops for the Canadian Online Publishing Awards Zoom broadcast from Toronto, or as they call it on the website: β€œCanada’s Ultimate Awards Party.”

The party is a hybrid in-person and virtual event, bringing together heavy hitters from the journalism industry, including the CBC, The Narwhal and The Walrus. And in that room of newsmakers, our small group made an outsized appearance in national categories.

Today, I am delighted to share our metals β€” the second highest number of awards for any single news group!

πŸ₯‡ GOLD for Best Local Community News/Sports for Madeline Dunnett’s deep dive series Why are these Courtenay apartments being demolished?

πŸ₯ˆ SILVER for Best Continuing Coverage of a Story for Mick Sweetman’s reporting on Nanaimo overdose deaths

This is your win as much as it is ours. As a local, community-powered media outlet, these stories wouldn’t have happened without your ongoing support.

This includes the many local folks who have contributed to our reporting, those who read and share our stories each week and the hundreds of readers who support us with a monthly financial contribution.

If you care about award-winning local journalism, now is the time to support it. Every dollar you contribute goes toward this local news service, and we can't do it without your sustained support.

I support this local news service!

In addition to these awards, our sister outlet The Wren in Kamloops also won:

πŸ₯ˆ SILVER for Best Photojournalism for Justin Moore’s story Kamloops honours lives lost on Overdose Awareness Day

πŸ₯ˆ SILVER for Best Patriotic Story for Lyssa Martin’s The complex, changing ways Kamloopsians marked July 1 through the decades

πŸŽ‰ On behalf of The Discourse team, here's to a bunch more award-winning news stories in 2026!

Sincerely,

Jacqueline Ronson
