It was a beautiful fall day for Nanaimo’s Remembrance Day ceremony this year with a large crowd gathering at the cenotaph in Dallas Square downtown. 


This is the third year I have gone to photograph the event and it always moves me to see the support that veterans have in our community.

Nanaimo Art Gallery Offers Three Unique Walking Tours Inspired by New Exhibition

As part of the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s current exhibition, Commercial St., the gallery is offering three Friday Lunchtime Walking Tours that begin in the gallery and move out onto Commercial Street itself.

Each tour brings a distinct lens: one led by Snuneymuxw artist Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun (Nov. 14), one by archivist Christine Meutzner (Nov. 21), and one by James Knight from the City of Nanaimo (Nov. 28).

Each tour is $5 per person or free for Nanaimo Art Gallery Members. Spots are limited and can be purchased at NanaimoArtGallery.ca.

Monday, Nov. 17, 7:30 p.m.: Canada’s world renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra will perform music by Handel, Avison, Telemannl, J.S. Bach and Lully at The Port Theatre. Tickets start at $39.50.  


Thursday, Nov. 20, 9 p.m.: Manne Tavares and Bev Finch will play a Pizza, Pints and Music fundraiser for Nanaimo Women Helping Women at Wolf Brewing Company. Tickets cost $40. 


Thursday, Nov. 20, 9 p.m.: Ida Maidstone and Zoe the Strange will play ethereal pop and IDM propelled outsider dance at The Vault Café. Tickets cost $10.

Now until Saturday, Nov. 15, various times: Malaspina Theatre presents George Orwell’s Animal Farm at the Malaspina Theatre. Tickets cost $10 or are free for VIU students and staff with ID. 


Friday, Nov. 14, noon: Join Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun, for a Snuneymuxw perspective of Nanaimo’s Commercial Street. After the walking tour, make sure to view Commercial St., the current exhibition from artist Samuel Roy-Bois.Tickets cost $5.


Friday, Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m.: Pisuwin is an epic first-ever Wolastoq story-ballet by director and choreographer Igor Dobrovolskiy and multi-disciplinary artist Nipahtuwet Naka Wespahtuwet (Possesom) Paul, set to the soaring music of Polaris Prize and Juno award-winning composer Jeremy Dutcher. Catch it at The Port Theatre. Tickets cost $60 or $35 for students. 


Friday, Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m.: Listen to the magic of live storytelling performed on stage with Stories of Courage at the Unitarian Hall. Tickets cost $10. 


Saturday, Nov. 15, noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 16, 4 p.m.: Interdisciplinary artists Geneviève Johnson and Samantha Letourneau present Quantum Conversation II, a two-day immersive arts experience unfolding at Chapel Street Hall that brings together film, live performance, sculpture and participatory installation to explore memory, movement and connection across time and place. Admission is pay what you can.

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 6 p.m.: Tears of Gaza will be screened at Vancouver Island University, Building 200, Room 203 by the VIU Muslim Women’s Club and For Palestine Vancouver Island. Admission is free.

Thursday, Nov. 13, 7 p.m.:  Using soldier correspondence from The Canadian Letters and Images Project, a talk by Dr. Stephen Davies will consider how correspondence from the First World War can add to our understanding of Remembrance at the Bowen Park Complex. Admission is free. 


Thursday, Nov. 13, 7:30 p.m.: Sapphic Games Night at The Vault Café. 


Friday, Nov. 14, 11 a.m.: VIS Studio’s Fifth Annual Christmas Art Sale — a three‑day celebration of original, handcrafted work by Vancouver Island artists. The sale runs from Nov. 14 to 16, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with an opening reception on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m.


Friday, Nov. 14, 6 p.m.: The VIU Mariners basketball teams take on the Capilano University Blues at the VIU Gym. Women's game at 6 p.m. and men's game at 8 p.m. Admission is free for all VIU students.


Saturday, Nov. 15, noon: The Mid-Island Métis Nation will celebrate Métis heritage at the Nanaimo Museum.

Saturday, Nov. 15, 2 p.m.: Whistler author and wilderness therapist, Heather Hendrie, presents awfully hilarious: period pieces, an “anthology on dating and bodily function taboos,” at the Gabriola Island Library. 


Sunday, Nov. 16, 1 p.m.: Turn an inspirational quote or favorite song lyric into a bold, uplifting poster to share positive vibes in Art Lab Sunday at the Nanaimo Art Gallery. Tickets cost $5 or are free for members. 


Tuesday, Nov. 18, 6:30 p.m.: Billy-Ray Belcourt, a writer and academic from the Driftpile Cree Nation in northwest Alberta, will share some of his community's history, bridging the historical and the personal in addressing the question of how to tell the story of the afterlife of the twentieth century at VIU’s Indigenous Speakers Series in the Malspina Theatre. Tickets are free.


Wednesday, Nov. 19, 10 p.m.: Writers can work on your writing in absolute silence from 10 a.m. to noon and then chat and socialize from noon to 12:30 p.m. at Shut up and Write at the Gabriola Island Library. 


Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7 p.m.: The Nanaimo Clippers hockey team takes on the Prince George Spruce Kings at Frank Crane Arena. Tickets cost $22, $20 for seniors or $12 for children aged 6-12. 


Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7 p.m.:  Join psychiatric nurse and author May Sosa, founder of Stories Without Labels, for a gentle, practical evening designed to help parents, caregivers and educators support neurodivergent children with calm and confidence at the Beban Park Social Centre. Tickets cost $45.


Thursday, Nov. 20, 2:30 p.m.: The Vancouver Island Symphony’s Keynote Speaker Series features Celtic musician Carolyn Cusson with René Cusson speaking about how Celtic music has grown through homegrown organizations, global collaborations and a universal appeal that transcends borders at the Oliver Woods Community Centre. Tickets cost $10-$15
