The Discourse's Cowichan This Week logo

Last weekend, The Discourse joined the Quw'utsun Sta'lo' Skweyul celebration to honour the river and connect with the community. It was wonderful to see both familiar faces and new ones! The day highlighted the collaborative work being done to protect this vital watershed and offered a chance to learn more about the river’s history and cultural significance.

At our booth, we invited visitors to share what they love about the watershed and what they’re curious about in the Cowichan Valley on a community mind-map.

Beyond what was added to the posters, many people told us they’d like to see more reporting on food security in the Valley. Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by!

Read more about Quw'utsun Sta'lo' Skweyul and see photos of the event here, or at the link below.

Looking ahead, next week marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. I want to highlight the annual Every Child Matters March, happening Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 9 a.m. in Charles Hoey Park. The event will feature reflections from residential “school” survivors and a performance by the Cowichan Tzinquaw Dancers before the walk through downtown Duncan.

You can explore some of The Discourse’s past coverage of the march here.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks for a wedding, but my colleague Mick Sweetman will be coming down from Nanaimo to cover the march. While this will be my last newsletter for a little bit, keep an eye out for updates and stories from the rest of the team!
