It’s Shalu again! You’ll be hearing from me a bit more this week and next while Eric takes a well-deserved break. Our regular newsletters next week may also be pared down a little, but we’ll be back to our regular reporting before the end of the month.
This past Tuesday was the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation but as so many have said, its message and purpose spans more than just one day. Our Nanaimo reporter, Mick Sweetman, attended the Every Child Matters march on Quw’utsun lands and spoke with residential “school” survivor Stella Seymour, her daughter and the event organizer Audrey George and others. He also took some great photos from the day. I’m happy to share his reporting with you today, which also includes some videos throughout.
When Eric and I were at Quw’utsun Sta’lo’ Skweyul (Cowichan River Day) a couple of weeks ago, we had the opportunity to meet with longtime Discourse readers and people who are new to The Discourse’s reporting. I heard over and over how much Eric’s recent reporting on the Agricultural Land Commission’s decision related to the Cowichan Estuary Restoration Project, as well as his reporting on the Municipal Forest Reserve, resonated with community members. In case you missed it, I’ve shared his recent stories below.
I hope you have a lovely fall weekend, and look forward to writing to you next week!
