| I’m on vacation this week but wanted to share some stories that I think are useful for the summertime. Our regular newsletters will be back on Tuesday, June 24 (not July as I wrote in Tuesday’s edition of The Hub, opps!).
This summer, you can check out the Pride events that are still happening this month, find the best places to camp, go see an art exhibition, watch a local football match, learn more about invasive plants or go on a tour of Nanaimo’s heritage trees.
This is also a good time to get some feedback on stories you think should be covered in our community. If you have any story tips you can email me at nanaimo@thediscourse.ca, the most helpful suggestions are specific ones but feel free to provide general feedback as well.
One thing you may have noticed in the Nanaimo This Week newsletter on Thursdays is a new “council corner” section where I recap what’s happening at Nanaimo City Council meetings. The idea behind this new section is to provide readers with information about your local government that can be quickly scanned in an email.
We will still write stories on bigger issues before city council such as a controversial plan to build a new boathouse on Long Lake, or the bylaw that bans recording of council meetings, but the day-to-day civic news will be sent directly to your inbox.
I’d also love to hear your feedback on this new “council corner” section. What do you think of it so far? If you find it useful, why? How can we improve it? Let me know by replying to this email.
Thank you for reading,
Mick Sweetman

Our annual Spring Member Drive is happening now through June 16 — a time when we invite readers who regularly read and appreciate this journalism service to pitch in and support it. Twenty five of you have recently signed up to be monthly supporters of The Discourse’s journalism, meaning we are now at 46 per cent of our goal! Several of you have also contributed with one-time support. Thank you!
We have a ways to go, and a contribution of any amount you can afford each month goes a long way toward sustaining our newsroom so we can deliver more original, helpful and engaging local reporting into 2025 and beyond.
